What are the regulations in Wells pertaining to harvesting shellfish other than soft shell clams?

While the shellfish ordinances for the Town of Wells only regulates the harvesting of soft shell clams there are other species of shellfish  that are open to recreational harvesting by those possessing a valid recreational shellfish license issued by the Town of Wells. Unless otherwise noted, the season for harvesting these other species are currently restricted to the same dates that the Town of Wells permits the harvesting soft shell clams.

Each of the following species of shellfish are regulated by the state Department of Marine Resources, DMR , and are subject to the following limits and regulations:

  • Oysters- Must be 2.5” minimum with a limit of 1 peck per day. The harvesting of oysters in Wells is limited to those dates published by the Town of Wells that permit the harvesting of softshell clams. Harvesting is restricted to those holding a valid recreational shellfish license issued by the Town of Wells.
  • Little Necks- Must be 1.0” minimum with a limit of 1 peck per day. The harvesting of the class of clams referred to as ‘little necks’  in Wells is limited to those  dates published by the Town of Wells that permit the  harvesting of softshell clams. Harvesting is restricted to those holding a valid recreational shellfish license issued by the  Town of Wells.
  • Surf/ Hen Clams- 3 bushel limit per license holder per day, no minimum size limitations. Harvesting is limited to those dates published by the Town of Wells that permit the harvesting of softshell clams. Harvesting is restricted to those holding a valid recreational shellfish license issued by the Town of Wells.
  • Mussels – 2 bushels per day per person. No license required and no seasonal  restrictions.
