Overview
Wells Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provides 24/7 emergency ambulance services, ensuring high-quality emergency care for residents and visitors in the Town of Wells. Our emergency calls are handled through the Wells Communications Center via 9-1-1. If you are unsure whether an ambulance is necessary—don’t guess, call EMS at 9-1-1.
Location
Wells EMS operates out of the Wells Regional Medical Community Building, located at 114 Sanford Road, approximately one mile east of the Maine Turnpike. Our fleet includes three Type III ambulances, each equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology.
History & Structure
Founded and incorporated in 1990, Wells EMS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our budget is partially funded by the town, with additional support from donations and generated revenue. A volunteer board of directors, appointed by the Wells Board of Selectmen, governs our organization.
WEMS Board of Directors
The Wells Emergency Medical Services (WEMS) Board serves to ensure that our town's emergency medical services operate with excellence and a strong commitment to the health and safety of the community. The board works collaboratively to guide the strategic direction and operational performance of WEMS.
Medical Oversight & Leadership
Our Service Medical Director, a volunteer position appointed by the Board of Directors, is an experienced Emergency Room physician responsible for ensuring the highest standard of patient care and adherence to medical protocols.
The department is led by a full-time Director of Operations, who oversees daily operations, including:
- Personnel management and scheduling (42 per diem employees)
- Quality assurance and training
- Payroll, equipment inventory, and maintenance
- Policy development and emergency response coordination
Our Professional Team
The lifesaving work of Wells EMS depends on highly skilled, state-licensed Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). Our team includes professionals at all certification levels:
- Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B)
- Emergency Medical Technician - Advanced (EMT-A)
- Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (EMT-P)
In crisis situations, our EMS team provides expert leadership, critical decision-making, and compassionate care—often making the difference between life and death, temporary or permanent disability, or the length of a hospital stay.
